Apple keeps killing my iPhone

I turned my mac on this morning and loaded iTunes because the new iPhone 2.0 software was supposed to be out. I started the download and went off to shower, it was ready to install when I was done. After rebooting, my iPhone displayed a "plug me in to iTunes" picture and I did.
Instead of seeing info about my phone and all my sync options I got a white page with nothing besides the word "iPhone" on it. After restarting I got a little further, with an actual error message, iTunes store error code 9838. Super not-helpful. After restarting and rebooting several times I'd gotten a variety of errors, mostly 9838 again, but also for variety 9844 and nothing at all.
This is the second time in a week my iPhone broke. It refused to sync after updating to Mac OS X 10.5.4/iTunes 7.6.2 last weekend and I had to take it in to the Apple Store.
I've already got an appointment set tomorrow to take my phone in, and while I don't really mind having to take it in once, earlier this week while I could still make calls and use it normally, I'm not OK with my phone being dead for an entire day.
I'm really pissed off this is my first experience with the iPhone 2.0 software: completely busting my phone.

The guy at the Store said even their new customers buying a phone couldn't activate them. I suggested they hold all new activations so current customers (like me) could get through and back up, but he said it wouldn't help because there are just so many people trying to activate.
The only option is to join Apple in DDOS attacking their servers until it finally works.

Hi. Two items here --
1) I'm very sorry to hear that you are having iPhone trouble. I am probably about to buy one, and I very much hope it will be okay, because I really don't need a series of crashes.
2) Are you aware that missyvumyg.livejournal.com claims that you designed their page? I think you may want to take a look at this; I kinda doubt that you actually did the design, and I also kinda doubt that you want your name associated with it.
Best wishes --

Jon,
All my friends who've bought the new iPhone 3G are very happy with it and Apple seems to have fixed the activation servers now that they aren't under such a heavy load. A friend waited in a three hour line last night, so you may want to wait until the lines go down still.
As for that LiveJournal... I did design the theme, but I didn't design it for them. It's one of many I created originally for Vox and adapted over to LiveJournal. Unfortunately it's not the first spam blog I've seen using my work.

Yeah their activation system is completely hosed today under the strain of the 3G release. They might have done well to not tether the firmware upgrade release date (which actually does need to re-activate your iPhone) with such a major hardware release date.
I managed to upgrade yesterday prior to the onslaught, hopefully things will lighten up in the next hour or two so you can finish that upgrade. :(
