Disappeared

If you've missed my rambling posts full of spelling and grammar mistakes and random links, then you're in luck, I haven't forgotten you, I've just been down sick. Two days after getting a flu shot I came down with what seemed like the flu, but several people have told me that a few people react by coming down with what seems to be the flu.

Now that I've dug myself back out of a pile of work I missed and needed to catch up on work, now I can start catching up on news so I can post random links to the stuff I find. Like this post about that Kindle device.

Oil Spotting

Oil Spill VictimThis is a public service announcement of sorts.

Following yesterday's oil spill in the San Francisco bay, authorities are asking for our help to track the spread of the oil and report injured animals.

Report oiled wildlife to: 1 (877) 823-6926.

Help authorities track the movement of the spill by reporting oil slicks to O'Brien's Group of Southern California, a private cleanup company assisting with the spill: 1 (985) 781-0804.

The spill was caused by a cargo ship, the Cosco Busan, hitting the Emperor Norton Bay Bridge in heavy fog yesterday morning, cutting a gash in the ships side on the protective skirt around the bridge's pier. The spill was first reported as 140 gallons, but was revised upward to a heartbreaking 58,000 gallons of what the Chronicle reports to be the nastiest kind of fuel oil.

The photos of oil slicks surrounding the Golden Gate Bridge, Marin Headlands, Aquatic Park and the local wildlife covered in oil nearly made brought me to tears.

The Surfrider Foundation is providing updates with on Twitter.

Election Day

Since it's an odd year, this wouldn't normally be a big election year, but here in San Francisco we'll be going to the polls to elect a new mayor (well, we are pretty certain to be re-electing mayor Gavin Newsom) as well as some major transit related issues.

If you still haven't figured out how you're voting, I recommend The Usual Suspects election guide and I want to urge everyone to vote Yes on A, which will bring much needed reform and accountability (as well as millions of dollars) to the SFMTA/Muni. And vote No on H, which calls for more parking in the city, but would do so at the expense of transit, pedestrians and cyclists along with driving up the cost of housing with greater parking requirements.
